🏛 The twelve houses
If the sign is the style, the house is the stage
The same Mars in the sixth house shows up at work and in the seventh shows up in relationships. If the body is what and the sign is how, the house is where.
The houses begin at the Ascendant: the sign it falls in is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on around the twelve (the Whole Sign method). This is why houses need a birth time.
1th house — self, body, first impression
The house that begins at the Ascendant, and the starting point of the chart. It covers the visible self, the body and constitution, and the attitude that switches on automatically in a new situation. A planet here comes to the front of the personality and becomes the first thing people reach for when describing this person — this is the house you cannot hide.
2th house — money, possessions, self-worth
The house of what you earn and make your own. Not only income and property but innate talent, and the sense of what you consider yourself worth. A planet here colours how money is made and spent, and tells you what has to be in hand before this person feels safe.
3th house — communication, siblings, short trips
The house of speaking, writing and learning. Siblings and neighbours, the routes you travel daily, and short courses of study all belong here. A planet here affects how thought is exchanged and shows what role you take in everyday relationships — think of it as the channel information uses to reach you and leave you.
4th house — home, family, roots
The lowest point of the chart, the part nobody sees. It covers the house you were born into, your parents, the space you live in now, and who you are when alone. Traditionally the final phase of life is read here too. A planet here describes the shape of your base, and what has to be in place before you can spend force outside.
5th house — romance, creativity, children, play
The house of what comes out of you. The excitement of romance, the things you make, children, and whatever you do purely because it is enjoyable. A planet here tells you what makes this person feel alive. It is the house of play rather than duty, so when it sits empty a life easily fills up with obligation alone.
6th house — daily work, health, routine
The house of what repeats. Not the career itself but the work inside it, the state of the body and its upkeep, and service to others. A planet here shows the rhythm the everyday runs on and where stress lands in the body. Unglamorous, and it occupies most of a life.
7th house — partner, marriage, one-to-one
The house of whoever sits across from you. Marriage and spouse, business partners, and open adversaries are all read here. A planet here tells you who you are drawn to and what you expect from a relationship. It is the first house opened when reading marriage timing — and the subject of the next stage of this chart.
8th house — shared resources, intimacy, transformation
The house of what gets mixed with someone else. A partner’s assets and inheritance, loans and taxes — money you do not control alone — and deep emotional and physical union. It is also the house of dying and being remade, so the stretch where a whole life gets turned over is read here. This is where concealed things are handled.
9th house — long journeys, higher learning, belief
The house that widens the world. Study abroad, long-distance travel, higher education, religion and philosophy, publishing. If the third house is nearby information, this is the worldview strung together from it. A planet here shows what you live by and which experiences opened your field of view.
10th house — career, public standing, reputation
The highest point of the chart, the part most visible to everyone else. Career, social position, and what the world knows you as. Traditionally the parent who represented the public role is read here too. A planet here tells you how your name travels and what you end up assessed on.
11th house — friends, groups, hopes
The house of people who gather because their aims agree. Friends and peer groups, the organisations you belong to, and what you hope to reach. Where the seventh is one-to-one, this is the many. A planet here shows which crowd you are comfortable in, and what you take from people and give back.
12th house — the unconscious, retreat, what is hidden
The hardest house in the chart to read. The unconscious and dreams, time spent alone, what you tell nobody, and the patterns you repeat without noticing. Places withdrawn from the world — hospitals, retreats — belong here too. A planet here shows little on the surface and remains a force the person themselves finds difficult to handle.
