At last, the heart of Myeongri: the Useful God. It is the energy your chart most needs to hold its balance — the weight you put on a tipped scale, the prescription made for your own body. Find it and three things resolve: which luck is good luck for you, which activities and environments keep you alive, and why the same year is a windfall for one person and an ordeal for another.
📖 The main point — pressing down and propping up
The fundamental method for finding it is the balance method. The principle is simple: strong charts get pressed down and drained, weak charts get propped up and supplemented. Candidates for a strong chart: Output, which drains the force (releasing it through expression); Wealth, which spends it (depleted by governing); Officers, which press it down. Candidates for a weak chart: Resource, which generates me; Friends, who stand shoulder to shoulder. Which of the three (or two) you choose depends on the chart’s specific circumstances — which energy is already muddied, which sits cleanly. 🔍 In practice — the demo chart’s Useful God
Find the Useful God for the demo chart judged strong (Byeong Fire, doorway of midsummer, four Fire). Strong means draining or pressing. Reviewing candidates — Output (Earth): releasing Fire’s heat as finished work, a good candidate. Wealth (Metal): there is Sin Metal in the chart, so an object to govern exists. Officers (Water): water to cool the blaze, an urgent candidate. The natural picture is to take Water (Officers) as the core Useful God with Metal (Wealth) as the supporting energy that feeds it (Metal generates Water — a structure where Wealth keeps the Officer alive). So for this person, Metal and Water years are welcome and Wood and Fire years are an overheating warning. There it is — the fortune reading has finally acquired a <i>reason</i>.

Practise finding the balance Useful God once more. Case — Gyeong Metal Day Master, born in the Yu (autumn) month, four Metal: extremely strong. The balance answer: the force has to come out. Candidates are Water (draining — Metal generates Water and it flows away), Fire (refining — Fire controls Metal and shapes it), Wood (Wealth — something to spend the force on). If this chart holds a single point of Water, that Water easily becomes the leading Useful God, because strong metal is more gently used by letting it flow (Water) than by pressing it into submission (Fire). Once the Useful God is fixed, life advice follows automatically: “work that expresses, teaches and lets things flow (Water = Output) is your road.” One character compressing an hour of career counselling — that is the power of the theory.

Q. What are the favourable, unfavourable and hostile gods? The supporting cast that follows once the Useful God is fixed. The character that helps it is the favourable god, the one that controls it the unfavourable, the one that helps the unfavourable the hostile. A fortune reading is, in the end, the judgement of whether this year’s characters sit on the favourable side or the unfavourable one. Q. I can’t find my Useful God at all. That’s normal. It is the hardest stage in Myeongri and takes professionals years. Shortcuts: ① settle the strong/weak verdict firmly first ② take it as a direction (“Metal and Water are welcome” is enough) ③ verify backwards against the luck you’ve lived. Don’t fixate on pinning one character. Q. Does the Useful God never change? The orthodox position is that the natal Useful God is fixed, while some schools hold that when a Luck Pillar changes the board substantially, the energy actually needed changes. Knowing the argument exists is itself advanced literacy.
