Introducing chart structure — raising the skeleton
The board of my life, set by the month Branch
A story to start
If the Useful God is what you need, the chart structure is what kind of person you are. In building terms, the Useful God is the missing material and the structure is the blueprint. The key to the blueprint is, again, the month Branch — the most powerful seat in the chart (intermediate lesson 3) also sets its skeleton. What Ten God the month Branch (precisely, the principal of its Hidden Stems) is to the Day Master — that is the basic structure.
🏺 A spoonful of origin
The classic of structure theory is a Qing-dynasty work by Shen Xiaozhan. It divides structures broadly into auspicious gods (Direct Officer, Wealth, Direct Resource, Eating God) and rough ones (Seven Killings, Hurting Officer, Indirect Resource, Rival), and sets the principle: keep the auspicious ones alive and refine the rough ones. It doesn’t say a rough structure is a bad fate — it is raw ore needing cutting (the help of other characters), and the highlight of the book is its claim that a well-cut rough structure rises higher than an auspicious one.
📖 The main point — how to fix the structure
The order: ① identify the month Branch ② find its principal Hidden Stem ③ see what Ten God that is to the Day Master ④ that Ten God plus “structure” — the name is complete. Example: the month Branch is Yu, its principal is Sin Metal, and Sin Metal to a Gap Wood Day Master is Direct Officer → a Direct Officer structure. This person’s stage in life is the board of organisation and honour. One exception: when the month Branch is in the Friend group it isn’t taken as a structure, and separate names — Prosperity structure or Blade structure — are used instead (you cannot be your own stage).
🔍 In practice
Fix your own structure: month Branch → principal → Ten God → “I am a __ structure.” Then reread that Ten God’s intermediate lesson — this time from the angle of “the board of my life” rather than of personality. An Eating God structure is a board of specialist talent; a Seven Killings structure a board of breaking through crisis. Does what you do now match your board? That one question is the practical value of studying structure.
🧭 Working through the situations
Two exercises in fixing a structure. Case 1 — Byeong Fire Day Master born in the Yu month: Yu’s principal is Sin Metal, and Sin Metal to Byeong Fire is Direct Wealth → a Direct Wealth structure. The skeleton of the life is “the board of managing diligently and accumulating,” so finance, administration and substantial business are natural stages. Case 2 — Im Water Day Master born in the In month: In’s principal is Gap Wood, and Gap Wood to Im Water is Eating God → an Eating God structure. “The board of letting talent flow out” — education, planning and food work fit. Add the idea of surfacing and it gets more precise: when the month Branch’s Hidden Stem also appears among the visible Stems, the structure is distinct; when it doesn’t, the structure is faint. Hence the reading that “a chart with a distinct structure spends little time agonising over its path, while a faint one is multi-talented and wanders longer.”
❓ Frequently asked
Q. Which matters more, structure or the Useful God? They have different roles. Structure asks what board you play on (a theory of structure); the Useful God asks what that board needs (a theory of balance). One classic tradition centres structure, another centres the balance-based Useful God — the two great ranges of the field, and modern practitioners lay both over each other. Q. Are there charts where no structure can be fixed? When the month Branch is in the Friend group it isn’t taken as one of the eight but handled separately as a Prosperity or Blade structure, and for months with complicated Hidden Stems the structure is chosen by which Stem has surfaced. Still ambiguous, leave it as a faint structure and read from the Useful God. Forcing a structure on is the worst option. Q. If the structure is broken, is the life ruined? No. It only means a character is breaking it, and when the spoiler is suppressed in the luck, the structure revives. That broken-then-completed drama is rather the Myeongri archetype of the late bloomer.

Complete: “I am a __ structure, and the board of my life is __.” Next lesson we tour all eight structures one by one.
