Wood bears fire, fire bears earth — the wisdom of the circle
A story to start
Picture a campfire. Fire (Fire) catches on the logs (Wood), and after burning all night, ash (Earth) remains. In that ash and soil, minerals (Metal) form, and at dawn droplets (Water) bead on the cold metal surface. And that water raises trees again. Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. This circle is called the generating cycle. It is a picture of five energies passing a baton to each other like a relay.

Learn the five links until they come off the tongue. Wood generates Fire — the tree keeps the flame alive. Fire generates Earth — fire burns down into soil. Earth generates Metal — soil holds and grows the ore. Metal generates Water — metal beads with water, as a spring comes from a crack in rock. Water generates Wood — water raises the tree. To generate means to give energy. In a chart, plenty of energy generating you means plenty of support behind you; plenty of energy you generate means someone pouring their talent outward.
📖 The main point, part two — generating drains the giver
Now the important reversal: generating isn’t free. To keep a fire alive, the log has to burn away; raise a child and the parent’s energy drains. So Myeongri says the generating side “leaks.” The reason a mother’s love is called great is that it is love that accepts the cost — and Myeongri is the study that expresses this human logic through a physics of five energies. This concept becomes decisive later, when you learn about a strong versus a weak Day Master.
🔍 In practice
If your chart lacks an element, using the energy that generates it is one approach, rather than filling it directly. Someone short on Fire can wear red, certainly — but can also warm indirectly through Wood, which bears Fire: a morning walk, plants, green. The lucky colour on the daily fortune tab is calculated on this same generating principle.
🧭 Working through the situations
Apply the generating cycle to building a team. Water (planning and research) bears Wood (launching new business), Wood bears Fire (marketing and publicity), Fire bears Earth (operations and stabilising), Earth bears Metal (quality and financial close), and Metal bears Water again (data analysis feeding the next plan). The order in which work flows is the generating cycle exactly. In parent and child too — a parent generating a child is the natural order, and as lesson four showed, generating comes with depletion. So Myeongri advises that the more a parent generates, the more they need their own charging — the energy that generates the parent. Q. Isn’t a chart full of generating the best? Surprisingly not. With generating and no control — no brake — the energy easily runs away in one direction. The standard for a good chart isn’t “generates a lot” but “the circle turns.” Q. Is receiving lots of generating always good? Excessive generating becomes over-protection. Water a plant too much and the roots rot. There is even a term for it — “a mother’s love so excessive it ruins the child.” Balance is always the key. Q. I can’t memorise the generating order. Learn it as a story: burn the wood (Wood generates Fire) and it becomes ash (Fire generates Earth), ore forms in the soil (Earth generates Metal), a spring rises from the rock (Metal generates Water), and that water raises the tree (Water generates Wood). One campfire scene and you’re done.
