A story to start
“What’s your zodiac animal?” is a familiar question; “what day are you?” is not. But in Myeongri the second is the one that matters. Of the eight characters only one wears the crown — the Stem of the day you were born, the Day Master. The Day Master is you, and the other seven characters are all supporting cast arranged around it. You have to know who the protagonist is to follow the drama.
🏺 A spoonful of origin
The Day Master wasn’t always the protagonist. Tang-dynasty Myeongri was centred on the year pillar — the animal. Then a Song-dynasty figure named Xu Ziping overturned the board: how can the hundreds of thousands born in the same year share one fate? He moved the reference point from the year to the day, and that innovation made the whole discipline far more precise. It is why Saju Myeongri is also called Ziping Myeongri, after his name — a paradigm shift a thousand years ago, a Copernican turn for the field.
📖 The main point — the Day Master is the fixed reference
The moment the Day Master becomes the reference, every interpretation gets coordinates. A character stops being “good” or “bad” and becomes “what it is to me.” The same Byeong Fire — the sun — is the sunlight that opens the blossom for Gap Wood, the great tree, and can be excessive heat that dulls the shine of Sin Metal, the jewel. There are no good and bad characters, only relationships — that is the central philosophy of Day-Master-centred Myeongri. And the Day Master never changes. Luck shifts and circumstances shift while the reference point, you, stays — which is why it is called the origin point of a life.

On your chart tab, the upper character of the third pillar is marked “me.” That is your Day Master. The site describes the ten Day Masters as characters — the midday sun for Byeong, dawn drizzle for Gye, and so on. Read yours and check what fits and what doesn’t. What fits is where the Day Master shows clearly; where you hesitate, other characters may be covering it — and finding out why is what the rest of the study is for.

There is a joke among practitioners: if you want to know a date’s chart, make sure you celebrate their birthday. Know the birthday and you have the Day Master, and the Day Master alone reads half their basic temperament. An exaggeration, and not by much — the Day Master is one of eight characters and carries close to half the weight of the interpretation. It is the protagonist, after all.

Take study methods by Day Master as an example. Straight-grained Day Masters like Gap Wood and Gyeong Metal suit head-on study by a fixed timetable; a flexible one like Eul Wood tends to suit interleaving across several subjects.
