Hidden Stems — the Stems concealed inside the Branches
Outward face and inner mind: an earth character is a drawer
A story to start
When someone quiet detonates at karaoke, we’re startled: that was in them? Myeongri isn’t startled — you only have to look inside the Branch. The twelve Branches aren’t single-coloured; each is a drawer holding two or three Stems inside. These concealed Stems are the Hidden Stems. If the outer character is the outward face, the Hidden Stems are the inner mind.
📖 The main point — three compartments in the drawer
In (寅), for instance, holds three Stems: Mu, Byeong and Gap. They are called the residual (Mu — the lingering of the previous season), the middle (Byeong — the seed of what comes next) and the principal (Gap — the essence of this character). The principal is strongest, so a Branch’s element and Ten God are read from it (In is Wood because its principal is Gap Wood), and this site’s Branch labels follow the principal too. Hidden Stems matter because the principle behind the three-way combinations you’ll learn later, and the answer to advanced questions such as why the four Earth Branches each have a different character, are all inside these drawers.

No need to memorise (the table is always there to look up). Today just fix the concept: ① a Branch is a mixture of several Stems ② the principal represents it ③ so a Branch is more composite and has more story than a Stem. Look up the Hidden Stems of your own day Branch. The day Branch is your inner mind and the seat of your spouse, so the characters in that drawer hint at the you that doesn’t show on the surface.
🧭 Working through the situations
Here is a moment where the Hidden Stems overturn a reading. A chart that shows only quiet Resource and Friend on the surface, with a Hurting Officer concealed in the day Branch’s drawer — that reads as the plot-twist character: mild as a rule, and suddenly detonating in front of an injustice. In relationship consultations the Hidden Stems are a regular fixture too — the identity of someone “different before and after you started dating” is usually the gap between the outer and the inner characters. Which is why professionals always open the drawer of the day Branch, the spouse seat. As a note, the four Earth Branches have unusually complicated drawers because, as transitional-season characters, they hold both the lingering of the last season and the seed of the next. That is where the saying “when the Earth Branches come in, a chart gets complicated” comes from.

Q. Do I have to memorise all the Hidden Stems? Aiming professional, you will eventually — for now, being able to look them up is enough. Do learn the pattern though: the four peak Branches (Ja, O, Myo, Yu) have simple drawers of one or two compartments, while the four birth Branches (In, Sin, Sa, Hae) and four storehouse Branches (Jin, Sul, Chuk, Mi) have three. Q. What are residual, middle and principal? The ranking of the Stems inside the drawer. The residual is what remains of the previous season, the middle is the energy that links through the three-way combination, the principal is the character’s essence and representative. At beginner and intermediate level the principal alone makes a valid reading. Q. Do you read the Hidden Stems as Ten Gods too? Yes — advanced reading takes the Ten God of each character in the drawer to interpret the desires of the inner mind. Direct Officer (the model student) on the surface with Indirect Wealth (an appetite for business) in the drawer — that is what the chart of a civil servant dreaming of a side business looks like.
