Take two people with the same Byeong Fire — sun — Day Master. One was born at noon in August, the other at dawn in January. Which lives the more sun-like life? Myeongri answers, without hesitation, the first. A summer sun rules everything by existing; a winter sun is hidden by a single cloud. The character that creates this difference is the month Branch — the Branch of your birth month, which is to say your birth season.
📖 The main point — why the month Branch is king
The eight characters do not have equal say. The classics agree in naming the month Branch the most powerful seat, and the reason is physical: the month Branch is the season you were born into, the climate in which the other seven characters are all placed. However distinctive the actors on the stage, the lighting and temperature of the stage decide the mood of the play. So the second question in reading a chart is always what the month Branch is — which season you were born into. (The first, of course, is the Day Master.)

Method: ① identify your month Branch ② identify its season (In-Myo-Jin spring, Sa-O-Mi summer, Sin-Yu-Sul autumn, Hae-Ja-Chuk winter) ③ see whether your Day Master’s element is strong or weak in that season. Each element has its season: Wood in spring, Fire in summer, Metal in autumn, Water in winter, and Earth takes force at the end of each season (the Jin, Sul, Chuk and Mi months). A Day Master that meets its own season is in full force — the term is “commanding the season” — and weakens in the opposite one. “A Byeong Fire born in summer = a sun in season = strong.” That single judgement is half of the strong-versus-weak reading you’ll learn later.
🧭 Working through the situations
Compare two people with the same Byeong Fire — sun — Day Master. A is born in the O month, midsummer: the sun has met its own world, so the baseline output is high. Expression is large and presence strong, and overheating (burnout) becomes the assignment. B is born in the Ja month, midwinter: a winter sun is precious. The output is low and the value of its warmth maximised, so B becomes someone who gives deep warmth to a few. Not better or worse personality but the difference between an output sun and a warmth sun. In practice, get into the habit of always adding “of which season” after naming the Day Master character — it doubles the resolution of the reading.

Q. If the month Branch matters that much, is the hour pillar unimportant? They belong to different layers. The month Branch sets the climate — the background — of the whole chart; the hour pillar shows later life, children and the intimate private foreground. The background is more fundamental, and without the foreground the picture isn’t complete. Q. Is Fire strong in everyone born in summer? Being born in summer does mean Fire takes force, and if there is no Fire character in the chart at all it becomes “a heated stage with no fire actor.” That is why season (the month Branch) and characters (the count) have to be read together. Q. What is strong for someone born in a transitional month? Earth takes force. Being the energy of the bridge between seasons, there is a reading that people born then are strong at mediating and adjusting.
