Friend and Rival — versions of me

The sibling who puts an arm round you, and the one eyeing your dinner

🌿 IntermediateLesson 5

A story to start

Picture a house with many siblings. Touch one of them outside and they all come running to take your side. And when one chicken gets delivered? Instant competitors. That double face is the essence of the Friend group — my own element, versions of me. They can be strength, and they can be who you split the share with.

📖 The main point — how Friend and Rival differ

Friend (比肩) means “shoulder to shoulder” — same element and same polarity as me, a genuine lookalike. Healthy self-regard, solidarity with peers, a steady pace of your own are Friend’s strengths. Rival (劫財) carries the fierce name “seizes the wealth” — same element, different polarity, so a rival who looks like you and runs on a different grain. Competitive drive, boldness, quick reactions are the strengths, and as the name says, it is what to watch around money. A chart heavy in this group has strong autonomy and suits its own work over working under someone; a chart without it has less strength to endure alone, so good colleagues become an essential condition.

🔍 In practice

Count your Friend-group characters. If there are many (three or more) — independence, self-employment, a licensed profession, anything under your own name suits, and drawing lines around money is a lifelong assignment. To go into business with someone, put the shares and roles in writing: survival rule number one. When a Friend-group year arrives in your luck (Gap or Eul years for a Gap Wood, for instance) competition sharpens and the urge to go independent grows — this site’s annual tab flags such years as a Friend year or a Rival year.

🗣️ The story people tell

The old texts have a fearsome phrase for a crowd of Rivals fighting over a single piece of Wealth — a house of many siblings with only one inheritance. The modern reading is gentler: someone heavy in this group earns more when they design a structure of earning together and dividing precisely, rather than gripping wealth alone. Energy isn’t something to remove but something to design for.

🧭 Working through the situations

Conditions for a successful partnership when your Friend group is strong. ① Put the shares and the settlement rules in writing before you start — conflict in this group always begins over the share. ② Don’t overlap roles; two people both playing chief executive sends the boat up the mountain. ③ Use a third-party settlement system (an accountant, an automated tool) — a structure where money conversations don’t come out of a human mouth is what protects the relationship. Conversely, someone without this group has less strength to endure alone and correspondingly less friction in collaboration — for them, simply belonging to a good team is the remedy. In fields where competition is daily, such as sport or sales, this group works as fuel.

❓ Frequently asked

Q. Does having no Friend group mean having no friends? No. It is the energy of competition and solidarity, not a count of friends. Charts without it often make friends easily precisely because there is no sense of rivalry. Q. I have a lot of Rival — how should I live? Turn Rival’s competitive drive away from fighting people and towards fighting the record. On boards measured in numbers — exercise, qualifications, sales figures — Rival is the finest engine there is. And systematise money management through standing orders and quarantined savings. Q. I heard “a woman with many Friends has a hard fate.” An outdated reading from an era that took a strong sense of self in a woman negatively. Translated into modern terms it means “someone who drives their own life” — an ability now, not a flaw.

✏️ Today’s one step

Count your Friends and Rivals and compare against your own experience of partnerships, groups and siblings. If you are heavy in this group and have been burned by a business partnership, you can now put a name to why.
