🌑 절 (絕)

Stage 10 of the Twelve Life Stages

Twelve Life StagesCut off — entirely empty, and just before new life takes hold

🌑 What 절 means

Severing is where the energy has been cut completely. It is the emptiest point of the twelve, and the key to it is that what comes next is Conception. Because it is empty, something new can enter. So modern Myeongri reads Severing as reset and transition rather than as an ending. In temperament it shows as sensitivity to change, quick decisions, and the resilience to get back up after collapse.

📍 It reads differently by position

In the year pillar

Severing in the year Branch is sometimes read as surroundings that changed greatly in early life, or an experience of being cut off from the roots. That experience remains as the ability to adapt anywhere. A root more familiar with moving than with settling.

In the month pillar

Severing in the month Branch reads as young adulthood where direction or surroundings changed substantially. Rather than going straight down one road, you find your seat by switching. The breaks of that period are more accurately read as corrections of course than as failures.

In the day pillar

Severing in the day Branch reads as connections that arrive and leave dramatically. Both meetings and partings are decided quickly. In midlife, training yourself to decide by criteria rather than by feeling is what protects a relationship.

In the hour pillar

Severing in the hour Branch reads as the shape of life changing substantially once in later years. Some take up something entirely different after retiring. Living physically apart from children is common, and that is not the same as distance.

💼 Work it suits

Suited to work that redraws a board — restructuring, pivoting a business, opening a market abroad, freelancing. Especially forceful in crisis management and rebuilding projects.

🍀 The kind reading / ⚡ The blunt one

🍀

You know how to rebuild from a seat where everything was lost. That isn’t learned; it only comes from going through it. Having few regrets is a large asset too — the person who cuts what needs cutting at the right time is the one who goes far. Don’t hurry to fill the space that is currently empty with just anything. Severing energy opens an entirely different board when it meets an eye for what to let in.

The talent for cutting has the same face as the habit of running. That is usually where this bill comes from — a repeating pattern of switching whenever it gets hard, never rooting anywhere, and losing time rebuilding from scratch every time. People don’t stay long either. Here is the remedy: when you want to quit something, defer the decision by a month and record the reasons in the meantime. If the reason is the same a month later, that isn’t running, it’s judgement.
