“Why did I move house that year of all years? Why did I meet that person then?” Myeongri answers such questions with combination and clash. The natal chart is the stage set, and when a character arriving in the luck touches that set — binding it in combination or shaking it in a clash — an actual event occurs. The last piece of the puzzle in reading luck: the trigger.
📖 The main point — three types of trigger
① Touching the day Branch — an event in my own seat (home, spouse, daily life). Years that clash it bring frequent moves, job changes and shifts in relationships; years that combine attach connections. ② Touching the Useful God — an event in quality of life. A year the Useful God gets bound in combination pauses a good function (the benefactor is too busy to help); a year it is broken by a clash is a hard year. Conversely, when an unhelpful character is bound or broken, the year comes loose! ③ Waking a sleeping character in the natal chart — where a character from the luck completes a three-way combination with two in the natal chart, that element suddenly becomes a force and the board changes. With In and O in the chart, a Sul year completes the In-O-Sul Fire team — and it becomes a year of fire.
🔍 In practice
Write down the annual Branches for the next three years and tabulate their combinations and clashes with your day Branch and Useful God. You complete a three-year event forecast: “2027 Mi Earth — six combination with my day Branch O, a year of connection and stability / 2028 Sin Metal — clash with my In Wood, a year of movement.” A forecast is only a forecast, and the day of someone who brought an umbrella still differs from the day of someone who didn’t.
🧭 Working through the situations
Tracing backwards is what grows your combination-and-clash skill fastest. Method: write down the years of your life’s major events (starting school, a job move, the start and end of a relationship, a house move) and check what relationship that year’s Branch had with your natal chart. “A six combination with my day Branch arrived the year I married”; “the year I resigned was a day-Branch clash.” Even three or four matches raise the hair on your arms, and the events that don’t match train you to look for another cause (a Ten God, the Useful God). Apply it forward with care — “a day-Branch clash the year after next, so there is movement in it” is useful as a forecast, while pronouncements like “you will definitely divorce that year” are not a reading but a curse. Keeping the line between forecast and curse is the professional ethic.

Q. Can I marry in a clash year? A clash isn’t a ban on marriage. If it clashes your day Branch, it is a year your living base gets substantially rearranged — which may mesh rather well with the rearrangement that marriage is. The correct approach is judging it together with the year’s other factors (whether it favours the Useful God). Q. What if the Luck Pillar and the year combine or clash with each other? An advanced-of-the-advanced topic. A clash between the pillar’s Branch and the year’s is read as the very current of that year’s luck churning; a combination as the pillar’s theme amplified that year. See that far and you are no longer intermediate. Q. Can a bad combination or clash be prevented? You can’t remove the energy, and you can design where it gets spent. As with using a year of movement on a planned house move — “if the water is going to flow, dig the channel yourself” is the whole of Myeongri prevention.
