Imagine musical chairs. Ten Stems, twelve Branches — every time they pair off in the sexagenary cycle, two Branches are necessarily left without a partner. In the bundle of ten starting from Gapja (Gapja to Gyeyu), Sul and Hae are left over. Those two unpartnered characters are the Void — literally “empty and lost.” But is it really lost?

If the Void characters of the bundle your day pillar belongs to appear in your chart, the business of that character and that seat is said to show up as a sense of being almost, but never quite, in your grasp. Wealth in the Void makes thirst for money and indifference to it coexist; the spouse seat in the Void makes an unfillable emptiness in relationships the theme. But traditional Myeongri attaches a condition: the Void becomes depth, rather, in religion, scholarship, art and the life of the mind. Only an empty vessel can hold anything. The classics cite plenty of cases where the Void was used beautifully in the charts of practitioners, scholars and artists.

Find your day pillar’s Void (most calendar apps show it). If those characters appear in your chart, look back at whether you have felt an unfillable quality in that Ten God and that seat. If so, the prescription isn’t to thrash about filling it but to turn the emptiness into depth — study that area, share it, sublimate it. Its practical weight is low, so treat it as reference material.

The Gapja bundle (Gapja to Gyeyu) has Sul and Hae as its Void; the Gapsul bundle has Sin and Yu; Gapsin has O and Mi; Gapo has Jin and Sa; Gapjin has In and Myo; Gapin has Ja and Chuk — the rule being the last two Branches that get no partner in that bundle. Case — a chart with Wealth in the Void: plenty of people earn and never feel filled. The prescription isn’t earning more but redefining what money means (giving, spending on experience). The essence of the reading is here: the Void’s thirst is sublimated, not filled. Officers in the Void becomes detachment about titles; Resource in the Void becomes learning outside the institutions — every Void has its route of sublimation.
