Elemental balance in practice — reading two charts side by side
A chart in flames and a chart with no water — how the prescriptions differ
A story to start
A doctor sees two patients. One is burning with fever, one is dehydrated. Both are imbalances of the body, and the prescriptions are opposite. Charts are the same. Today we work through two hypothetical charts to see how the prescription splits between excess and absence. Consider it the mid-point check of the intermediate course.
📖 Case A — four Fire, a chart in flames
A chart with four Fire (like the demo chart in beginner lesson ten). Diagnosis: passion, expression and speed are top-grade while the system is overheating — burnout, hasty decisions and running out of steam become the repeating pattern. The prescription is release and cooling. ① Earth, which drains Fire (the Output group) — making things into a finished product and putting them out, regular meals, a hobby that puts your hands in soil. ② Water, which cools Fire (the Officer group) — swimming, meditation, a fixed rule for rest at night. Note that this chart has only one Water — a sports car with small brakes, so the prescription is to deliberately grow the brakes, the rest routine.
📖 Case B — zero Water, a dry chart
Now a chart with no Water at all. Diagnosis: with no energy of rest and gathering-in, it is easy to become someone who doesn’t know how to stop. The pattern is continuous output with no time for a thought to steep, until the battery goes flat. The prescription is supplement and substitute. ① Direct supplement — drinking water often, defending sleep hours, a quiet space to the north. ② Using the generating cycle — building Metal, which bears Water (habits of tidying and finishing), fills Water indirectly. ③ Using the luck — placing recovery time in Water years and on Water days. The same “imbalance,” and A gets a subtractive prescription while B gets an additive one. That instinct is the whole of the elements in practice.
🔍 In practice
Write the same diagnosis for your own chart. Format: diagnosis (excess/absence) → predicted repeating pattern → prescription (release or supplement) → two things to do in daily life. Compare with the site’s deep-analysis comments and you have marked your own paper. Repeat once with a family chart and you are an apprentice reader who writes prescriptions.
🧭 Working through the situations
Following the excess-Fire and absent-Water cases in the main text, work through two more. A chart with four Metal — the embodiment of principle and decision, with an excess of frost so that people don’t settle nearby: that is the assignment. The prescription is Water to drain Metal (flexible communication, writing) and Fire to warm it (practising warm expression). For work, boards where strictness is an asset — finance, legal, quality — are the constitution. A chart with four Earth — the byword for dependability, heavy-bodied in the face of change and inclined to stockpile thoughts without releasing them. The prescription is Metal to drain Earth (organise and send out — writing, closing the accounts) and Wood to pierce it (setting a new goal). Boards that accumulate and protect — property, brokerage, administration — are the constitution. Grasp the pattern that every excess element has a paired prescription of draining and piercing, and a prescription sentence comes out for any chart you meet.
❓ Frequently asked
Q. What does it mean that count and force can differ? If you have two Water and both sit in midwinter, Water’s season, the substance is the force of four. Conversely three Fire all sitting in winter is a paper tiger. Count is troop numbers, season is morale — you learn it precisely in the advanced seasonal strength cycle. Q. Do remedy items — colours, objects — really work? Their essence is as devices that make you conscious of a missing energy. A blue wallet doesn’t earn money; remembering Water energy (prudence) every time you see it changes behaviour. Using the power of a symbol practically — that is the grown-up way to use remedies. Q. Are there charts with only one element in the extreme? There are. A structure where one energy dominates the chart is handled in the advanced course by a special grammar, the “following” structure. It is the exception where the ordinary grammar doesn’t apply, and it involves the reversal of “if it is that strong, follow the current instead.”
